Castle Cornet & Sark, Guernsey — oil painting by Natasha K. HE

4 Years, 36 Artworks, Across 26 Island Landmarks: A Journey Through Guernsey’s Heritage

Over the past four years, I’ve applied my urban planner’s eye and architect’s precision to capture Guernsey’s soul, from sweeping aerial coastlines and historic architecture to native flora and fauna, and quiet interiors beneath ancient roofs.

Each medium opens a distinct emotional doorway into the island’s landscape:

  • Pen & Ink: Precise, high-contrast, and intricate. Best for bringing out structural detail, dramatic linework, and deep architectural shadows.
  • Oil Painting: Rich, bold, and textured. Ideal for vibrant atmospheric warmth, hyper-saturated colour, and striking light.
  • Watercolour: Soft, fluid, and luminous. Crafted for gentle coastal light, delicate atmospheric washes, and poetic quietness.

1. The Little Chapel, Guernsey

Said to be one of the smallest chapels in the world, and covered inside and out in broken china, shells and pebbles. Painting it meant painting thousands of fragments, each catching the light differently against the deep green of Les Vauxbelets.

2. Castle Cornet, Guernsey

The castle has guarded the mouth of St Peter Port harbour for centuries, and it is the first thing you see arriving by sea. I have drawn it in ink and painted it in oil, with Sark sitting out on the horizon behind.

3. Castle Breakwater Lighthouse, Guernsey

At the far end of the breakwater beyond the castle, this is where the harbour finally gives way to open water. I drew it first in pen and ink, then painted it in oil; the painting has since sold.

5. Victoria Tower, Guernsey

The granite tower above St Peter Port, raised to mark Queen Victoria's visit to the island. I have drawn it by day and painted it at night, when the floodlights make the granite glow against the maritime pines.

6. Hauteville House, Guernsey

Victor Hugo's home through his years of exile on Guernsey, and one of the most extraordinary interiors I have ever drawn. The staircase alone took weeks — every surface is carved, tiled or panelled.

12. La Vallette Bathing Pools, Guernsey

The tidal sea-water pools cut into the rock below Fort George, still used by swimmers all year round. Drawing them meant drawing the sea twice — once as water, once as reflection.
